"Perfect Form" written by Jaxsen
I know there are a lot of discrepancies
regarding “perfect form,” and I am not trying to convince you that my way is
the only way to shoot well. I am merely telling you guys what works for me. In
later articles I will probably run through the setup of my bow and arrow
tuning, etc. But for now, let’s just start nice and simple. Okay, for starters,
the first part of my shot sequence is stance. I make sure that my feet a
exactly shoulder width, and I imagine that there is a line that runs in front
of my toes that must align with the target (some people prefer a more open
stance but it is really down to personal preference). Second, I make sure my
grip on my bow is right; I shoot with the handle sitting in the small part of
my hand where the bone from my thumb and index finger meet. Some people shoot
with the handle resting on their lifeline but again, it is down to personal
preference. Next, I knock an arrow; check my grip on my release aid (this is
where finger shooters would grab the string) and finally, I draw my bow. I then
anchor, placing my jaw bone in-between my first and second knuckle and touching
my bowstring to the tip of my nose and corner of my mouth. I find that, on a shorter
ATA (Axle-to-axle) bow, the nose and mouth anchor are more important than the
jawline anchor point. Once I have my anchor point, I relax my bow arm (The arm
that holds the bow, not the release hand). This is to offload all the energy
from my draw cycle and evenly distribute it through my arms, shoulders and
back. Offloading this energy allows me to hold steadier on the target. The next
and final step of my shot process is to then relax into the release while
holding steady on the target. After the I feel the arrow go, I hold the pin on
the target for a further 2-3 seconds or so, then slowly let my arm drop. Let me
know if you have any requests for more detail on any certain aspects of this by commenting on this post.

The Infamous Hyperextending Elbow
Everyone at some point in their archery experience has been slapped in the arm with the bow-string which ultimately results in a very painful bruise. For Some people, it's lack of proper form, and others it's something they just can't help. A part of the problem is that lots of people, primarily females, have natural hyper-extending elbows. A hyper-extended elbow happens when your joint (elbow) is able to extend, more than it should. It's not a bad thing, unless it's causing you injury.
The first thing you should do to prevent yourself from getting a bruise on your bow arm is to wear an arm guard that covers up any and all of the potential damage area. Wearing an arm guard is for the case in which the bow string does come into contact with your arm, but you should have good form so that the string doesn't hit you in the first place.
To have proper bow arm form, your arm must be completely extended and your elbow must be parallel to the ground, Just like demonstrated in the following picture, please ignore all the additional writing in the picture, it was the best example we could find.

If you do both of these things, you shouldn't have a problem with the bowstring! If you are confused, please contact us and we will try to explain in a better way.

Buying your first equipment
This post is for all you beginners who want to buy your own equipment, but don't know where to start. Trevor and I (Natalie) will be telling you our suggestions so you can do what you think will work best for you.
Trevor:
For Olympic recurve, I suggest an aluminum riser with wood limbs that is ultimately is a take-down bow, such as a KAP, or Win & Win. In addition to the bow, I bought one of the cheaper Cartel plastic sights, a 12 inch stabilizer, and half a dozen Easton arrows (bare shaft). All together it was $320 for the limbs and riser together, $15-20 for the sight, about $30 for the stabilizer, and $30 for the arrows.
Natalie:
For a simple barebow, I suggest one of the less expensive recurve bows from Lancaster Archery. I got the Samick Sage as my first bow, but I also have a Cartel bow. It's best to go to a range where you can rent equipment to see what draw is the best for you. The Sage was around $130 and the Cartel was around $110 I believe, make sure you also get an arrow rest. I think the best way to go with arrows is to get them pre-fletched; you can also get them nocked too, but that usually costs more. You want to order the arrows with tips, and extra nocks. Start of with six, and as you improve buy six more, making sure the size corresponds with the type of bow you have. A quiver is also very important, you can get ones for as cheap as $10 and as expensive $200, but its ultimately your choice. As for arm guard and finger-tab, that will be your personal preference.

Things to remember when getting your own bow:
- it is not a toy
- you should get a case for it
- don't keep it strung when it's not in use, it's bad for it
- always use a bow stringer (we will make a post on how to use one soon)
